the verdict

I know you're honest
I know you're good
You'd never cheat someone
or tell a lie
And any voice that would
dare say otherwise
You can bet their conscience bends
to where money lies

Chorus:
Cause anyone
who really knows you
Anyone who knows you at all
Anyone who really knows you
holds you in their high regard

I see the eyes of
blind justice weeping
I hear the moan
of a truth untold
Words for hire
Words for sale
Stones to tip the justice scale

Chorus

And so I wish an angel for you
one with wings
to span your life
to watch you and protect you
and guard against
this season's strife

Chorus

Promise

In a world
Where nothing stays the same
I promise
In a world
Where everything is change
I promise
I may change my mind
From time to time
But I promise
I promise
In a world
A world of sun or rain
I promise
A world of loss or pain
I promise

Languages from other lands
Won't twist these words
you'll understand
You'll understand
Laws of physics
Laws divine
Laws that socially align
Yet I promise
I promise
I promise

No problem,
I'll have that to you by Friday
I'll call you right back
Check's in the mail
I'll love you always
I promise
I promise

Mexico

I've been thinking
'bout Mexico
When I went traveling
Over mountains and
through desert plains
To the ancient ruins
I heard the music of Palenque
I heard your mothers cry
Faded footprints
on a blood-stained soil
And the sacrificial lullabies

Never understood
why I was put here
So I thought I'd go and see
What lay beyond
the borderlines
That were closing in on me
I saw the world
as a playground
And as an ancient battlefield
Some they have
a good time dying
Others die trying

So here's to all the victims
of things beyond their control
Some are slaughtered
by the planet we live on
Others by careless souls
And in the one-man
cell of suffering
Or in the back alleys of fear
Your windswept cries of
pain and desperation
Are too much for me to bear
Your windswept cries of pain
and desperation
Why can't others hear?

hard to know

I've been feeling
so downhearted
I can't quite put
my finger on it
When the man comes on
the TV set
to ask us all
if we feel depressed
well, I check, I check
everything on his list
It's hard to know
if it's just chemical reactions
It's hard to know
if it's just
appropriate reactions
to life, to life

Some people seem to
breeze right through it
They look at you like
there's nothing to it
Living up to their
full potential
Their mistakes
seem inconsequential
So what, so what
It's no big deal
It's hard to know
if it's just chemical reactions
It's hard to know
if it's just
appropriate reactions
to life, to life

Pretending to have a plan
or carry on
with artificial enthusiasm
I fake it, I fake it
cause I feel so desperate
I fake it, I fake it
I've been feeling
so downhearted
I can't quite put
my finger on it

ocean bed

My love is like the ocean
On a warm yet restless day
The rhythm of the motion
makes me melt away
And the skies are
great eyes
of white and blue

The edge of sand and water
The pounding of the waves
The sun upon my shoulders
like a warm embrace

And oh, the wind
blows round my
hair and skin
like a sweet breath
that passes from me to you
from you to me
from me to you
from you to me

Fishin'

Childhood sweetheart's
back in town
my high school valentine
down from New York City
fishin' on his mind

My hometown's
where our story starts
upon a summer lawn
kiss that made all time
stand still
same kiss that writes this song
We'd roam the
neighborhood at night
I'd watch him from afar
drive his old black car
up winding roads
and watch the city lights below
On the holidays we meet
talk about our lives and loves,
bittersweet

Cause in his eyes I see the boy
who saw me beautiful
a love all tenderness, no risk,
an easy set of rules
Now I see our lives and laugh,
it's sad but comical
We both love someone
we're not with
Don't tell me love is logical

He's casting out his line
in a river running clear
Something shiny flashes by
then disappears
He's got one running
on the line
he pulls it in to take up slack
It's wet and shakin'
in his hands
He throws it back
And he says it does not hurt,
he says it feels no pain
I watch it swim away from him
and I need to do the same

He ain't gonna catch me hook,
line and sinker
I'm gonna make my break,
it's now or never
He ain't gonna catch me hook,
line and sinker
I'd like to kiss him hard,
but it's now or never

Childhood sweetheart's
back in town
my high school valentine
down from New York City
fishin' on his mind

get a dog

We don't get along
that's plain to see
I guess you were lonely
and good or bad,
I was company

Although it hurt at first
when I knew it could not be
I've tried to be objective
and an idea came to me

Why don't you get a dog
They're easy to maintain
You can send it to
obedience school
and even have it
house-trained

Predictable disruptions
like when another dog's in heat
and in the evening, darlin'
it can curl up at your feet

You're less likely
to he burdened
by it's inconsistencies
or have to listen
to those repeats
of its days activities
Give it periodic checkups
for rabies and distemper
And maybe buy it
a little white collar
to ward off ticks and fleas

I just want you to he happy
and prevent another disaster
knowing how you thrive on
your self-image as
Lord and Master

Hence, the logical conclusion
and practical resolution
At the risk of over-selling
(Why don't you)

Why don't you get a dog
Why don't you get a dog
Get a dog!

Suicide
You are my suicide
You sharpen up the blade
that cuts me from the love
I struggle to make
The house it is on fire
I'll not run away
'cause I have the feeling now
it's just too late
I hear your laughter
but your laughter's full of pain
You are a stranger to me
yet you call my name
call my name
Three points form a triangle
Two points argue
through the night
Third point listens intently
then says
"Both of you are right"
You can make connections
with parallels and lines
Remember your
conclusions babe
are subject to change
with time
You did not want a lover
You were looking for a womb
Now your foundation's falling
forming your own tomb
You are my suicide
You sharpen up the blade
that cuts me from the love
I struggle to make
The house it is on fire
I'll not run away
'cause I have the feeling now
it's just too late
I hear your laughter
but your laughter's full of pain
You are a stranger to me
yet you call my name
call my name,
you call my name

resurrection
I am leaving
You are leaving
a place we left a while ago
Did we go there?
Was I dreaming?
Is it someplace close to here?
I am laughing
to keep from crying
I make each day inside of me
I am busy
so busy cleaning
I am grieving
I am leaving
So many years
we have been together
So many dreams
left unfulfilled
and though we made it
through stormy weather
Nothing moves
in this deadly still
Cause we hear no evil
speak no evil
see no evil
feel no more
I am leaving
You are leaving
a place we left a while ago
Did we go there?
Was I dreaming?
Is it some place close to here?
Can we hear the laughter
speak the kindness
see the future
feel once more?

Sea Fever
(Lyrics by John Mayfield)
I must go down
to the seas again
to the lonely sea and the sky
And all I ask is a tall ship
and a star to steer her by
and the wheel's kick
and the wind's song
and the white sails shaking
and the grey mist
on the sea's face
and the grey dawn breakin'
I must go down
to the sea again
to the call of the running tide
is a wild call, is a clear call
which may not be denied
And all I ask is a windy day
with the white clouds flying
and the flung spray
and the blown spume
and the sea gulls crying
I must go down
to the sea again
to the vagrant Gypsy life
to the gull's way
and the whale's way
where the wind's like
a whetted knife
And all I ask is a merry yarn
from a laughing fellow rover
and a quiet sleep
and a sweet dream
when the long trick is over

deer in the wood
Love me like a deer
in the wood
although I am many things
Oh that is how
I'd love to be loved
Love me like a deer
in the wood
Hear me like
the song of a bird
although I am many songs
Oh that is how
I'd love to be heard
Hear me like
the song of a bird
Hold me like
a thought in your mind
Like a secret
that's never been told
Oh that is how
I'd love to be held
Hold me like
a thought in your mind

Lullaby
Go to sleep, sweet Marian
for tomorrow will bring
fortunes for you
a new day for you
and loving friends
waiting for you
when you awake
Go to sleep, sweet Caroline
Roam the wild fields
and meadows
and tend to the
garden of loveliness
Trim it with nasturtiums
and marigolds
and close your eyes
of soft September skies
just after sunset
Go to sleep, sweet Marian
Have sweet dreams
always, Caroline
and close your eyes
of soft September skies
just after sunset

Mid-Winter's Spring Day
He was sitting
at a corner table
I didn't take much notice
He did not have
that charismatic charm
In fact - he made me nervous
But when I walked in
he seemed so elated
I was feeling very, very shy
I just wanted
to silently walk by
But today,
I'm not feeling so shy
Maybe I'll make cookies
and stop on by
If he's still here
and still happy to see me
Well, I would be up for
a walk in the park
Maybe we could go
somewhere after dark
If he's still happy to see me
Maybe he was just
laughing at me
Somehow I feel
it's worth a little more
investigating
on this mid-winter's
mid-winter's spring day
On this mid-winter's
mid-winter's spring day
He was sitting
at a corner table
